Task 2b: SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION




People live in 21century are exposed to uncounted number of chemicals and it is an irony that products that help to reduce the affect of chemical contains toxic as well. Some chemicals in cosmetics curse cancer, brain or reproduction system damage. Big companies claims that is too minor to affect the body but considering an average American women uses 12 personal care item, we are loading ourselves with chemicals. The problem is most of people are not aware of what is inside the product, and all it matter is its function and price. Surprisingly, there is a way to make cosmetic products without putting toxic chemicals, and there are organic products are already sold in a market. It is the company that stuck with a 1950’s science when putting chemical regarded as a fancy thing. To solve this chemical problem, it is important to educate the public. However this is not easy because the biggest source of information is advertisement and labels, which deceive people by using words like natural and organic. However, since there is no regulation for labeling by law, a company can put anything they like. Therefore, as a designer it is important to design a product that is easy to deliver information to the consumer. Design an organic product more appealing in also important.

This test gave me the awareness of energy that wasted unconsciously. Choosing eco-friendly material for building house or set rainwater catchment systems are the thing that I cannot do it within my ability, but small habits like replacing a product still can be used create lots of carbon. The result shows that if everyone on the planet lived my lifestyle, 5.25 Earths are needed, which was a shock to me. I think my life style reflects average 21century people. This test aware that the way people live in 21century is destroying world. As an industrial design student, we should consider being green in every process in design, production, long term usage and disposal.
